Arapawa goats are a feral breed of goats from Arapawa Island in New Zealand.  They came near to extinction when the New Zealand government decided they were a hazard to the environment of the island and determined to shoot them.  Betty Rowe, an American living in New Zealand, organized the rescue of some of the Arapawa goats.  Arapawa goats now live in New Zealand, the USA, and Great Britain.  They are a small, dual purpose breed, useful for milk and meat.  Goat's milk soap from Arapawa goats is available from Jenness Farm, see link under 'Arapawa Breeders' below.  You may also donate to the Arapawa fund to help save the breed on that site.

Arapawa Goats

We will be getting a starter herd of the rare Arapawa goats by the end of this month.  This will involve a trip to Massachusetts.  We will NOT be staying at the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast when we get to MA, however.  It's rather expensive and we'd probably have to book a lot farther in advance to get the murder room.
